This is a statement of FDA. What should parents know about using cough and cold products in children? * Do not use cough and cold medicines in children under 2 years unless guidelines specific data to make a provider of health care. * Do not give children medicine that is packaged and made for adults. Do that products labeled for use in babies, infants or children (sometimes called "children" use "). * coughs and colds are many different strengths. If you do not know the right product for your child, ask a health professional. * If other medicines (over-the-counter or prescription) are given to a child, the provider of health care of children should review and approve their use combined. * Read all information in the "Drug Facts" box on the label so you know the active ingredients and warnings. * Follow the instructions in the "Drug Facts" box. Do not give a child medicine more often or in larger quantities than what is stated on the package. * Too much medicine may lead to serious and fatal side effects, especially among children aged 2 years and under. * For liquid products, parents should use the measuring device (dropper, dosing cup or dosing spoon) that comes with each different medicine formulation and is marked to administer the recommended dose. A teaspoon or soup kitchen is not a measurement device adapted for drug delivery children. * If a meter is not included with the product, parents should buy one at the pharmacy. Make sure the dropper, dosing cup or dosing spoon has markings that match the dosing that is in the instructions of the "Drug Facts" box on the label, or is recommended by health care provider of the child. * If you do not understand the instructions on the product or how to use the dosing device (dropper, dosing cup or dosing spoon), DO NOT USE the medicine. Consult your supplier of health care if you have any questions or are confused. * Coughs and colds only treat cold symptoms such as runny nose, congestion, fever, aches, and irritability. They do not cure colds. Children get better with time. * If the condition worsens or a child does not improve, stop using the product immediately bring the child to a provider of health care evaluation.
